Why a consumer 4G router is not enough for CCTV
A home 4G router works for a single camera at a shop. Surveillance estates need more:
- Cameras must stay online. One SIM means one operator. When that network drops, recording to the cloud or control room stops. Dual-SIM routers switch to the second operator automatically.
- Mobile SIMs rarely get a public IP. Indian operators usually place SIMs behind carrier-grade NAT, so port forwarding to the NVR does not work. You need a VPN tunnel or a private APN with a static IP from the operator.
- Sites are hot, dusty and unattended. Industrial routers are built for cabinets, DIN rails and outdoor poles, not living rooms.
- Someone has to manage hundreds of sites. Firmware, SIM status, signal and data usage need one console, not a visit to each pole.
How to choose the right router
| Site | Recommended model | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 4 cameras, retail outlet, ATM, small warehouse | IR11004GD (4G, dual SIM) | Two operators, five 10/100 combo ports, 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi |
| Same, with two operators active at once | IR11004GDW (4G, dual module) | Two LTE links up together, for higher availability |
| Many cameras, aggregation point, busy branch | IRX100-5G or IRX100-5Gv2 (5G) | 5G SA/NSA, Gigabit Ethernet, Wi-Fi 6 |
| Basement, shielded kiosk, rural pole, weak indoor signal | IR1105-ODU-4G or IRX1160-ODU-5G | IP65, mounted where the signal is |
| Cabinet with cameras plus sensors or a PLC | IR1180DM (4G, DIN-rail) | DIN-rail, RS232/RS485, GPS |
Power the cameras from a PoE switch or injector. The router's combo ports carry data.
Work out the upload bandwidth first
CCTV is an upload workload, and 4G upload is usually lower than download. Size the link from your cameras, not the plan's headline speed:
- Check each camera's stream bitrate in its settings. It depends on resolution, codec (H.264 or H.265), frame rate and scene activity.
- Add up the streams that leave the site at the same time. Cameras that record to a local NVR and send only sub-streams or event clips need far less upload.
- Keep at least 30% headroom for signal variation.
Worked example, an assumption to replace with your own figures: eight cameras sending a 1 Mbps sub-stream each to a control room need about 8 Mbps of steady upload, plus headroom. That suits a good 4G signal. Twenty cameras streaming main streams point to a 5G router or local recording.
Remote viewing without a public IP
Because most SIMs sit behind carrier-grade NAT, the router builds an encrypted tunnel out to your control room or video management system instead of waiting for inbound connections:
- Site-to-site VPN: IPsec IKEv2 (AES-GCM, SHA-2), OpenVPN, GRE/mGRE or DMVPN from each site to the control room. IKEv2 tunnels use hybrid post-quantum key exchange (ML-KEM, NIST FIPS 203).
- Private APN: Every Instaroute router supports APN configuration and SIM PIN lock per SIM, if your operator gives you a closed user group with static IPs.
- Management without a public IP: The always-on, encrypted management channel works without a public IP, so you can update firmware and troubleshoot every site from one console.
Cameras never need to be exposed to the internet. A zone-based firewall and DoS protection run on the router itself.
Running a camera estate
- Signal and SIM health: per-SIM RSRP, RSRQ, SINR and CSQ, with signal-quality alarms and worst-signal ranking.
- Data usage: SIM arbitration by data usage helps you stay within plan limits on two SIMs.
- Zero-touch rollout: import serial numbers, apply a template, and each router configures itself when powered on at site.
- Flat pricing: Instaroute SDWAN Lite 2.0 manages up to 100,000 Lite Series routers per deployment at one flat price per device, with no data metering.

Frequently asked questions
Which is the best 4G SIM router for CCTV cameras?
Choose an industrial dual-SIM router with enough Ethernet ports for your NVR or cameras, a VPN for remote viewing, and central management.
For most small camera sites, the Instaroute IR11004GD (4G, dual SIM, five ports) fits. Use a 5G IRX100 model when many cameras share one uplink.
Can I view CCTV remotely on a 4G SIM without a static IP?
Yes. The router builds an outbound encrypted VPN tunnel to your control room or video management system, so you do not need a public or static IP on the SIM.
Alternatively, ask your operator for a private APN with static IPs.
How much 4G data does a CCTV camera use?
It depends on the stream bitrate.
A camera sending 1 Mbps continuously uploads roughly 10 GB a day. Recording locally and sending only sub-streams or event clips cuts that sharply. Check your camera's bitrate setting and multiply by the hours it streams.
Do I need 5G for CCTV?
Not always. 4G suits a few cameras or event-based uploads.
5G helps when many cameras stream live to a control room from one site, or where 4G upload is congested.
Does the router power the cameras over PoE?
No. Use a PoE switch or injector for the cameras.
The outdoor ODU units have one PoE LAN port for their own connection to equipment indoors.
Are Instaroute routers certified for use in India?
TEC MTCTE certificate 244903206 covers nine of the ten cellular models, all except the IRX100-5Gv2.
The range also carries IEC 62443, CE and RoHS.
