What schools, colleges and universities need from the network
One network carries exams, fees, CCTV and a thousand student phones. Education networks have more users per link than almost any business. The users range from young children to research staff. Attendance systems, fee payments, online exams and the ERP share the same links as student streaming. Most IT teams are small and look after several campuses. The network has to be safe by default and simple to run.
School firewall and campus security checklist
Use this checklist when you write your RFP or compare vendors. The right-hand column shows what you get from Nexapp.
| What to ask for | What you get |
|---|---|
| Separate networks for students, staff, administration, labs, CCTV and guests | VLANs, VRFs and zone firewall rules; per-SSID isolation on Wi-Fi |
| Web filtering by category, with different rules for students and staff | Category filtering at the edge; allow and block rules per user and group in Nexapp SSE |
| Safe search enforced for students | Safe-search mode for the groups you choose, in the SWG |
| Protection against malware and malicious sites | IPS, gateway antivirus, DNS security and InstaShield IP reputation blocking |
| Control of bandwidth-heavy apps during class and exam hours | DPI-based application control and QoS with five traffic classes |
| Identity-based Wi-Fi sign-in for staff and students | RADIUS for Wi-Fi and 802.1X, plus captive-portal sign-in, on the Nexapp Controller |
| Guest and event Wi-Fi | InstaWave captive portal on a separate guest VLAN |
| Logs kept for 180 days in India | Central logs hosted in India or self-hosted, with retention set to your policy; syslog export |
| One console for every campus | Nexapp Controller for SD-WAN edges; Instaroute SDWAN Lite 2.0 for routers |
Secure Wi-Fi for students, staff and guests
Students should never land on the same network as the exam server. Nexapp runs Wi-Fi on the same secured edge as your firewall and SD-WAN. So Wi-Fi, WAN and security follow one policy and one support line.
- Staff and faculty sign in with their own credentials through RADIUS or 802.1X, and reach the ERP, LMS and administration systems their role allows.
- Students get a separate SSID and VLAN, with web filtering and application control.
- Guests, parents and event visitors sign in through the InstaWave captive portal on an isolated guest VLAN.
- Labs and CCTV sit on wired segments that Wi-Fi users cannot reach.
On Instaroute routers, Wi-Fi is dual-band Wi-Fi 6 (AX3000-class) on the IRX100 5G models and 2.4 GHz on most IR1100 4G models. That suits smaller schools, coaching centres and branch campuses. For large lecture halls, hostels and auditoriums, ask us to plan access points with you. See Enterprise Wi-Fi.
Web filtering and threat protection
Filtering has to follow the student, not just the building. At each campus, the Nexapp edge filters the web by category and blocks known-bad sites and IP addresses. See NGFW. The secure web gateway in Nexapp SSE adds TLS inspection under policy, safe search for the groups you choose, and antivirus and sandboxing for downloads. Staff and students using the InstaAccess client get the same web policy at home as on campus. DNS security blocks malicious domains before a connection starts.
University SD-WAN across campuses
A university with five campuses should not need five network teams. The Nexapp Controller connects campuses, study centres and administrative offices under one encrypted overlay.
- Hub-and-spoke, full mesh or site-to-site, with application-aware steering.
- Sub-second failover between leased lines, broadband and 4G/5G, using SLA probes on loss, latency and jitter.
- Zero-touch rollout for new study centres and exam venues. The edge pulls its configuration at power-on.
- Local internet breakout, inspected at each campus, instead of backhauling student traffic to one site.
- Post-quantum encryption on every tunnel: hybrid ML-KEM key exchange (NIST FIPS 203) with ML-DSA authentication.
For temporary exam centres and remote study centres, a dual-SIM Instaroute 4G or 5G router can be the only link. See SD-WAN Enterprise and 5G wireless SD-WAN.
Students' data, DPDP and CERT-In
Most school students are children under Indian data law. The DPDP Act treats anyone under 18 as a child. Section 9 requires verifiable parental consent before processing a child's personal data. It also bars tracking, behavioural monitoring and targeted advertising directed at children. The DPDP Rules, 2025 give educational institutions a limited exemption. They may track and monitor behaviour only for the institution's educational activities or in the interests of the safety of enrolled children. These duties, and the security safeguards, apply from May 2027.
What this means for your network:
- Keep monitoring purpose-bound. Web filtering and logging for safety and education fit the exemption. Using browsing data for anything else needs a separate legal basis. Take legal advice on your own policies.
- Protect what you collect. The Rules require reasonable security safeguards, including encryption, access control and logs kept for at least a year. Encrypted tunnels, role-based access and configurable log retention help.
- Keep ICT logs in India. CERT-In's 2022 Directions require 180 days of ICT logs within India and incident reports within 6 hours. Nexapp-hosted management and logs stay in India, and self-hosted ones stay on your servers.
The obligations remain with your institution as data fiduciary.
How a campus project works
- Survey. List your campuses, buildings, user groups, applications and links.
- Design. Define SSIDs, VLANs and zones, web-filtering profiles by group, and the edge for each campus.
- Deploy. Devices come online zero-touch; our field teams install where needed.
- Secure. Apply firewall, filtering and sign-in policy centrally.
- Operate. Your team uses alarms and reports, or our 24×7 NOC in Pune runs the network for you. See managed services.
Buying through a public tender? Government schools, colleges and universities often buy under the Public Procurement (Preference to Make in India) Order. Nexapp is a Class-I local supplier, and you get a local-content declaration and certificate with each bid. See certifications.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best firewall for a school in India?
One that separates student, staff and administration networks, filters the web by age and role, enforces safe search and keeps logs in India.
Nexapp's edge combines IPS, gateway antivirus, web filtering and application control, and Nexapp SSE extends the same policy to devices off campus.
Can students and staff have separate Wi-Fi?
Yes. Each group gets its own SSID and VLAN, with per-SSID isolation.
Staff sign in through RADIUS or 802.1X, and guests through the InstaWave captive portal.
Does Nexapp supply access points for large campuses?
Instaroute routers include Wi-Fi, dual-band Wi-Fi 6 on the IRX100 5G models.
For lecture halls, hostels and auditoriums, ask us to plan access points with you.
How does SD-WAN help a university with several campuses?
It connects every campus under one encrypted overlay, fails over between links in under a second, and lets you manage all sites from one console.
New study centres come online zero-touch.
What does the DPDP Act mean for school networks?
Children's data needs verifiable parental consent, and tracking and behavioural monitoring of children are restricted.
The DPDP Rules let educational institutions monitor only for educational activities or children's safety. Security safeguards apply from May 2027. The duties rest with the school.
Can web filtering work when students use devices at home?
Yes, for managed devices with the InstaAccess client.
The secure web gateway in Nexapp SSE applies the same web policy wherever the device connects.
